Investment Education

Transitioning from a vibrant startup environment to Vanguard, a titan in the financial services industry, marked a pivotal chapter in my career. As a Senior Graphic Designer, my initial role was to design educational materials for participants of the 401(k) plans that Vanguard administered. This position offered an unprecedented opportunity to engage with a diverse client base, ranging from medium-sized businesses to corporate giants like Google and FedEx. It was a profound expansion of scope and scale, exposing me to the intricacies of financial education and the responsibility of influencing the financial well-being of countless individuals.

This role was my first foray into an organization where design was not the core competency. Suddenly, I found myself in a milieu where the dominant language was starkly different from what I was accustomed to. At Design Force and Bailey Brand Consulting, conversations ebbed and flowed around design principles, art direction, color theory, and the nuances of typography. However, at Vanguard, the dialogue shifted dramatically towards business metrics, financial markets, EBITA, cost-benefit ratios, asset allocation, and risk tolerance. The contrast was stark, and it became evident that to truly excel in my role, I needed to bridge this linguistic divide.

Driven by a desire to enhance my contribution to Vanguard and deepen my understanding of the financial domain I was designing for, I embarked on a journey to master the language of business. Vanguard's support was instrumental in this pursuit, as they sponsored my graduate studies for an MBA. This educational endeavor not only sharpened my business acumen but also unveiled a newfound interest in leadership and people management. The MBA program was not just an academic exercise; it was a transformative experience that enriched my perspective, enabling me to view design through the lens of business strategy and organizational dynamics.

Armed with this comprehensive understanding, I began to see design not merely as an aesthetic or communicative tool but as a strategic business asset capable of driving meaningful outcomes. My enhanced business acumen allowed me to engage more effectively with stakeholders across the organization, translating complex financial concepts into accessible, impactful design solutions. Moreover, this journey ignited a passion for leadership, guiding me towards roles where I could influence not only design strategies but also the growth and development of teams.

My transition from Design Force to Vanguard, culminating in an MBA, was a testament to the evolution of a designer into a design leader. It underscored the importance of continuous learning and adaptability, proving that the fusion of design expertise with business knowledge can catalyze innovation and drive success in any industry.
